Join the Guild

The Gray House Guild is inviting applications for membership.

 

As the owners of the Allan Gray Continuing Care Centre, the Guild’s role is to ensure that we live up to the mission of providing an enriching, homelike experience for all our residents.

 

The Guild appoints the members of the Board of Management that is responsible for establishment of policy and oversees operations.

 

Guild members advocate for the Centre and for quality continuing care generally.

 

The members volunteer in a variety of roles, including operation of the Gift Shop, organizing fundraising events, and being welcoming faces for residents and their families.

 

The Guild meets monthly for lunch and a business meeting.

 

We are currently looking for new members with skills in advocacy and fundraising, as well as those who want to play a role in making the lives of our residents as positive as possible.  Members must be at least 18 years of age, and be able to produce an acceptable Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check.

Friendly Visitor

Senior Book Club

As a Friendly Visitor, your role is to offer companionship, engage in friendly conversations, and provide emotional support to our residents. Your presence can make a world of difference in their lives. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to:

  •  Visit at least once a week

  • Spend a minimum of one hour during your visit

  • Choose a convenient time between 10:30 AM and 4:00 PM on any day (Monday to Sunday)

Recreation Aide Volunteer

6 pm to 8 pm

Knitting Class

This is an ongoing, weekly volunteer position supporting Long Term Care residents/clients by facilitating recreation group activities 

​

  •  Visit at least twice a week

  • Spend a minimum of two hours during your visit

TASKS MAY INCLUDE:

• Assist with set up and clean up, if necessary

• Porter/accompany clients/residents to and from the activity area

• Communicate with clients/residents, staff, and visitors

• Participate in planning and implementing activities (e.g. baking, crafts, discussion groups, exercises, games, bingo, movie, gardening, special meals, special events, bowling, sing-a-long as requested by Recreation Manager Etc.)

• Initiating and encouraging participation in activities

Pub Night Volunteer Bartender

Fridays, 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm

Mixologist Preparing a Drink

Commitment: Fridays, 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm

 

Responsibilities:

​

Bartending: Prepare and serve beverages, including non-alcoholic drinks, beer, and wine, to residents during Pub Nights.

​

Customer Service: Interact with residents in a friendly and engaging manner, ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience during the event.

​

Setup and Cleanup: Assist with setting up the pub area before the event, including arranging tables and chairs, and help in cleaning up afterward.

​

Maintain Cleanliness: Ensure the bar area is kept clean and organized throughout the event.

​

Verify Age: Adhere to legal age requirements when serving alcoholic beverages, and request identification if necessary.

​

Assist Residents: Assist residents, clients, and customers who may need help accessing the bar or choosing beverages.

​

Handle Payments: If applicable, manage cash transactions for beverage sales and keep accurate records.

​

Report Issues: Communicate any issues, concerns, or suggestions related to Pub Nights to the designated coordinator.

​

Adhere to Policies: Follow all relevant policies and guidelines related to the serving of alcohol and the overall conduct during Pub Nights.

 

Requirements:

​

Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years old.

 

Experience: Previous bartending or customer service experience is a plus but not required.

 

Interpersonal Skills:

Friendly, approachable, and able to communicate effectively with a diverse group of residents.

 

Reliability: Commit to the scheduled Pub Nights every Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

 

Physical Ability: Able to stand for an extended period and lift moderate weights for setup and cleanup.

 

Team Player: Work collaboratively with other volunteers and staff to ensure a smooth and enjoyable Pub Night experience.

 

 

SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Patience and understanding

• Good social and communication skills

• Helpful and accommodating manner

• Sensitive, compassionate and tactful nature • Negotiating skills and experience of dealing with difficult situations

• Able to work on own or part of a team

• An interest in food and nutrition

• Volunteers will need to obtain satisfactory clearance and training from AGCCC’s Dietitian and Occupational Therapist

 

Available Shifts

Breakfast - 9:00 am to 9:30 am

Lunch - 12:00 noon to 12:30

Supper - 4:30pm to 5:00 pm

Seeking Board Members

Team Meeting Room

The Board of Management is responsible for overseeing the operation of the Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre (AGCCC).  It is composed of up to 12 community members who bring complementary skills to the governance table.  It establishes policies for the Centre.  It provides advice and direction to the CEO, who is responsible for day-to-day operation of the Centre.

 

All members of the Board of Management should be committed to advocating for high-quality continuing care generally, and ensuring it is provided at the AGCCC.  Knowledge of the operation of charities, and strategic planning in the nonprofit sector, are definite assets.

 

Directors must be at least 18 years of age, and must be able to obtain an acceptable Police Record Check.

 

We are particularly seeking Directors who have skills in one or more of the following areas:

 

  • finance

  • law

  • property management and facility operations

  • advocacy and government relations

  • research into and/or experience in working with seniors

  • human resources

 

We would also welcome applications from neighbours of the AGCCC.

 

Board members meet monthly, sometimes in person and sometimes virtually.  Members are expected to serve on one of the standing committees:  Finance, Property Management, or Governance and Human Resources

Adult Day Support Volunteer Weekdays 9 am to 3 pm

Mealtime Assistance Volunteer

As a Mealtime Assistance Volunteer, the AGCCC Occupational Therapist and/or Dietitian will train you with the Loving Spoonful Mealtime Assistance Program. As part of your volunteer experience, you will assist residents with getting to and from dining areas, feeding them, and working closely with residents to maintain safety in feeding/swallowing activities. This position is open for 18-year-olds and up.

​

 TASKS MAY INCLUDE:

​

• Provide nourishment.

• Be an active participant in the resident’s eating experience.

• Learn the resident’s mealtime style. • Have a helpful attitude, for example: • Take an interest – smile, engage in light conversation, describe the meal.

• Take time to feed or assist the patient to eat a well-paced meal.

• Know the resident’s strengths and difficulties and build on the strengths to compensate for the weaknesses.

• Follow the recommendations of the Supervisor assigned

• Watch for any changes in the resident’s eating pattern and report them.

• Ask the Care Manager for advice if you have difficulty following the recommended feeding strategies.
